Kalk Bay Karaoke

On Wednesday evening last week, right in the middle of university break, I was feeling extra groovy. I wanted to go dancing. I wanted to hear live music and meet new people. I wanted to sing. So I gathered some mates and headed off to Karaoke Night at the Brass Bell.

Brass Bell is a restaurant situated in Kalk Bay right on the water. On Wednesday evenings, the area of the restaurant referred to as the “bikini bar” is converted into somewhat of a club, with an open space for dancing and a stage with a karaoke setup for performing. I love going to these events. Not only do I have a passion for performance, but I thoroughly enjoy watching others entertaining and singing their hearts out, too.

Of course not everyone steps up onto stage – most just listen to the music from their tables (if they arrived early enough to grab one) or enjoy themselves on the dancefloor. Those that do perform however range greatly in age, culture, talent, charisma and confidence. This is one of the many reasons that I love the event so much: anybody can pick up the mic, and not a soul in the audience will judge them. Furthermore, a great range of genres are performed. Pop, rap, country and even theatre music is sung. For this reason Karaoke Night doesn’t have a specific target group – Karaoke Night caters, quite literally, to everyone.

I was brave enough to grab the mic on Wednesday evening. I’ve only sung at Karaoke Night twice before, and as much as I love it, I still get incredibly nervous. I performed I’m Yours by Jason Mraz with my roommate and bandmate, Morgan Blem. I was worried this piece would be too slow for the crowd and that the dancefloor would be left empty, but much to my relief most people sang along and waved their arms. For those 2-odd minutes I felt like a celebrity, and it was truly wonderful.

I highly recommend Karaoke Night. Whether you’re having a night out with some friends or family members or even if you’re looking to have some musical fun on your own, this is the event for you. The event begins at 8pm and entrance costs R30. Drinks and food can be ordered once inside. Please ensure that you and whoever joins you is over the age of 18, however, as the bouncers do check ID.

Come and watch as people from all over the world sing their hearts out to Mariah Carey and Eminem. Shower in their confidence and boogie to their energy. If you’re looking for a good time, Karaoke Night at the Brass Bell is the place to be.
